SECTION EIGHT
HQS INSPECTIONS

Before a unit can be approved for occupancy under the Section 8 program, the unit must meet the performance requirements set forth in 24 CFR 982 Subpart I: HOUSING QUALITY STANDARDS INSPECTIONS. Under HQS the following areas are inspected:

Sanitary Facilities
Food Preparation and refuse disposal
Space and security
Thermal environment
Illumination and electricity
Structure and material
Inferior air quality
Water supply
Lead based paint
Access
Site and neighborhood conditions
Sanitary conditions
Smoke detectors

If a unit does not meet HQS, it cannot be an assisted unit in the Section 8 Program.

The HABD Section 8 Department would be glad to provide prospective landlords with a copy of the inspection booklet. It contains detailed instructions for each room.
